in illinois, shows romney on top with 37. santorum at 31. gingrich, way down there at 14, and paul at 8. let me go to you, john heilemann. is this a chance for greatness for santorum to win a big state? >> certainly a chance for greatness, chris. the state of illinois hasn't had a competitive primary in decades on the republican presidential side. it is very much a state geographically divided between the north and south. you have republican, suburban republican counties around chicago and suburbs that are pretty moderate, should be romney country. then down state illinois, very conservative, much more like the south than like anything around chicago, and that's good hunting ground for santorum. gingrich has more or less abandoned the field there, headed down -- made a quick stop there yesterday or today, is headed now to camp out in louisiana. that 14% that gingrich has may erode considerably, may erode to santorum's advantage. it would be a huge win for santorum if he could pick up illinois after coming in so close in michigan and ohio, winning in the industrial midwest. it would be a big

-- if romney is it the nominee, he may be, probably will be, they need to grab the center and this brings in the base, is there any logic to why they keep talking this stuff up? >> well, i think there's logic to it although i think it's flawed logic. look, i have been convinced for the past two or three years that the republican base was going to turn out in november of 2012. they have been motivated by hatred of, animus toward president obama and i think that even though we've seen some poor turnout numbers in some of the primary republicans and caucus states, i think in the end the republicans will turn out. the white house believes the republican base will turn out strictly on the grounds they want barack obama out of office. susan makes the correct point, which is that republicans did think at the beginning they could win this argument on religious freedom grounds and they also thought they could extend the argument to try to make it look like president obama was trying to be too intrusive, government telling you what to do, a big government issue. >> here's the republican conundrum,

romney campaign that seems to have jangled some nerves. this was the splash page for the "huffington post." i don't know exactly what the f stands for but it's not good. i knew we would strike a nerve or two with that report because it is a sensitive subject. it is hard to talk about but i think it's important. there is something different about mitt romney as a presidential candidate as compared to every other modern major party presidential candidate, there's a certain amount of lying and stretching the truth and spinning history everybody expects if not tolerates at all levels of politics and on both sides of the aisle. there is something different about the romney campaign. this is an assertion by me and happy to see it challenged. there is something unique about the campaign and that is the frequency with which the candidate himself has been lying during the campaign. his willingness to lie about small stuff that doesn't seem to have political benefit to him, lying for the sake of lying but the campaign's lack of come punks and lack of remorse or even explanation when they get caught

-- campaign stands in the race. newt gingrich and mitt romney was in florida, ron paul was in nevada. because it's a caucus state, ron paul has a strategy, even though it was florida's night, him being in nevada made sense. on the night of the voting contest in colorado, minnesota and missouri, where was mitt romney? he was in colorado. now that turned out to be awkward for him because him being in colorado meant that he expected to win in colorado and he did not win in colorado. then there was the matter of him not being able to fill the room he was in in colorado. on the night of michigan and arizona, while mitt romney and rick santorum were awaiting results, where was newt gingrich? in georgia. knowing that he would frankly tank in michigan and arizona, and knowing also he desperately needs to win his home state of georgia in order to make a credible case for staying in the race. where you are on an election night speaks volume about campaign strategy and expectations. tomorrow night on super tuesday, rick santorum will watch the returns come in, the super tuesday returns, he will be watch
